I have included it because those rumours of a collaboration with Beth don’t go away!!
Massive Attack’s long-awaited Heligoland drops next Tuesday, and the Bristol duo will not be making us wait long for more material following the album release. As BBC 6Music reports, Massive Attack will release an EP of tracks that didn’t make the cut for the duo’s fifth studio LP, which is a relief, considering they recorded a bunch.
Robert “3D” Del Naja told BBC 6 Music DJ Steve Lamacq the EP is likely to feature a song recorded with Elbow frontman Guy Garvey, who will also appear on Heligoland number “Flat of the Blade”.
The EP may not be solely leftovers, according to 3D. “It will probably be made up of tracks that we didn’t put on this record and maybe some new stuff as well,” he told Lamacq. The Guy Garvey track, he said in the interview, is “obviously one of the tracks [they’re] looking at trying to finish.”
The song, called “Red Light”, is giving the trip-hop pioneers some problems. 3D explained, ”[We have] been playing [it] live for two years and we still can’t finish it. I really don’t know if it will get finished.” Even after speaking to Garvey about it, 3D felt the song’s future was questionable. “Some songs are like that,” he said. “Some happen instantly and some continually trouble you.”
It would be a real bummer for this song not to see the light of day, but what about the rumored tracks with Mike Patton, Beth Orton, Elizabeth Fraser? 3D didn’t get very specific in an interview with The Skinny, but he did say he and Grant “Daddy G” Marshall had “over 20 tracks left” they are considering for the EP.
3D said in the interview they were aiming for a June or July release date, pushed back from the previously announced goal of May. Hopefully they won’t be drawing this wait out as long as they did for the LP.
Heligoland features collaborations with TV on the Radio’s Tunde Adebimpe, Martina Topley-Bird, Horace Andy as usual, Damon Albarn, and others. The group has posted some Heligoland remixes on its Facebook page (become a fan to listen).
Massive Attack, on a U.K. tour right now, will also be doing the soundtrack for this spring’s Clash of the Titans remake, as we reported last month.
