Arni & Kinski

Below is a brief Bio of Arni & Kinski who directed the Magpie video for Beth Orton

Arni & Kinski have eclectic experience as artists. Icelandic natives, the two are drawn to extremes – unlikely combinations that produce magical results. They began making a name for themselves co-directing award-winning music videos, TV documentaries and commercials in their hometown of Reykjavik. With their increasingly high profile, Arni & Kinski formed a unique music-film collective called GusGus in 1995. GusGus’s first venture was a short film, “Pleasure,” written and directed by Arni & Kinski, coupled with an eponymous album. The group was signed by British record label 4AD, and released “Polydistortion” in 1997 to worldwide acclaim. From 1995-1999, GusGus traveled the world with a powerful stage show in which Arni & Kinski’s projected visuals melded with the group’s music in a moving and mesmerizing whole. In 1999, GusGus released a second album, “This is Normal,” to even greater critical and popular acclaim. In 2000, the duo created and directed Levi’s “Kiss,” a high-style iconic spot featured in Shots, Shoot, Boards and Campaign Screen.

Arni & Kinski have helmed signature campaigns for State Farm, Sealy, Infiniti, Volvo, Mercedes-Benz, GMC, Macy’s, Acura, Budweiser, Coors, Dockers, Old Navy, Toyota, Nissan, Hummer, Rexona, Milk, Kohl’s, Vaseline, Barnes & Noble, Kmart, Yellowbook, Bisquick, Dentyne, Singapore Airlines, JCPenney and GE, which won the silver at the 2009 NY Addy Awards.   In addition, Arni & Kinski have directed music videos for Beth Orton, Florence + the Machine, Sigur Rós, Jónsi, Ólöf Arnalds, The Editors, Snow Patrol, Iggy Pop, The Used, Dave Gahan of Depeche Mode, Café Tacuba, Travis, the Guillemots featuring Sir Ian McKellan.   Not surprisingly, the versatile directors shoot stills as well, with a photo exhibition at New York gallery, Honey Space, of images from their latest collaboration with Jónsi. Still, their most moving and memorable work might be their videos for fellow Icelanders, Sigur Rós, where Arni & Kinski blend emotionally powerful human storytelling with pure aesthetic beauty. Their promo for “Glósóli” won Best Rock Video at the London-based CAD Awards in 2006 and was also voted one of the best videos by Flaunt Magazine. “Gobbledigook” was a Best Rock Video nominee at the 2008 UK Music Video Awards and the 2009 SXSW Awards. “Vidrar Vel Til Loftarasa” snagged ninth place in NME Magazine’s “100 Greatest Music Videos.” In 2012, their work for Sigur Rós and Jónsi were part of the Contemporary Arts Center Cincinnati “Spectacle” exhibit.

© Here is a picture taken on the shoot of the video for ‘Magpie’. Arni & Kinski shot it in the sand dunes of Colorado this weekend. We were seeing stars and UFO’s and all sorts of hallucinations out there. Surreal shifting sands in the middle of the Rockies. Awesome is the word I think. Cannot wait to show you all the actual vid.
